North Huron Council Approves Adjustments to Recreation Fees
by Bob Montgomery
North Huron Council has made some adjustments to the proposed increases in recreational activities at the North Huron Recreation Centre.
Reeve Paul Heffer says at their last meeting council they replaced the complete adult membership from 2023 with a package that provides access to the public and lane swimming, public skating, use of the fitness centre and use of the court. Heffer says the cost for is 98 dollars and 75 cents a month and that's an increase of 25 percent from the cost in 2023.
Heffer says the second amendment affects aquatic memberships, swim memberships, fitness memberships, court rentals and youth ice rentals. Heffer says the fees for those activities will be seven dollars in 2024 and will go up to ten dollars the following year. So they're spreading the increase over two years.
Heffer says there had been some concern about the number of people from outside of the municipality of North Huron who use the facility. He says shopkeepers have told them those people contribute to the economy of the downtown area so they're not going to charge people from neighbouring municipalities more for using the facility.
Heffer adds, staff have looked at the fee schedules for surrounding municipalities and found that North Huron's fee schedules are pretty well equal with those other municipalities.
