Huron Shores Area Transit Launching Smart Card Library Pass Program

by Bob Montgomery

Huron Shores Area Transit is launching a new Smart Card Library Pass Program today.

Huron Shores Transit Coordinator Susan Mills says they were inspired by a couple of neighbouring rural transit systems who had started using a library pass to encourage people to use their system and they thought it was a good idea. “We contacted our local library systems, Lambton County, Huron County, North Middlesex and the Kettle & Stony Point First Nation and asked them if they'd be interested in joining in the program and they were all very interested. So we've developed a Smart Card Library Pass that any local holder of a library card can borrow at their local library for up to five days and that provides them with unlimited free rides on all of our four routes.”

Mills says the Smart Card Library Pass just might give a little encouragement to someone who has never used the system to give it a try. Smart Card Library Passes can be borrowed from libraries in Arkona, Bayfield, Exeter, Forest, Goderich, Grand Bend, Hensall, Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, Port Franks, Sarnia, Thedford, and Zurich. The pass is non-renewable, enabling as many cardholders as possible to borrow the pass and try out local public transit. Mills adds people are beginning to realize the rising cost of driving and that helps to make public transit a good choice.

Mills says the Huron Shores Area inter-community public transit links Lambton Shores, South Huron, North Middlesex, Bluewater and Kettle & Stony Point First Nation with each other and Sarnia, London, Goderich and Strathroy. The fully accessible service provides an important transit service for seniors, students, workers and youth for employment, education, health and wellness, and leisure.
