Huron Shores Area Transit Acknowledges Rotary Club Donation For Bus Shelters
by Bob Montgomery
Earlier this week Huron Shores Area Transit (HSAT) publicly thanked the Rotary Club of Grand Bend for their donation that helped make the transit system’s first three bus shelters possible.
Transit Coordinator, Susan Mills, says the cost of installing three bus shelters at the bus hub beside Sobeys in Grand Bend and at Points Plaza and Army Camp Road at Kettle & Stony Point First Nation was partially offset by a $6,500 donation from the Rotary Club. In 2023, HSAT acquired eight used bus shelters from Stratford Transit. Over the fall and winter, the shelters were refurbished and painted a medium royal blue colour consistent with HSAT’s branding. The bus shelters are accessible, with an opening wide enough for a wheelchair to enter and turn around and also come with a small two-person bench. With the refurbishment of the bus shelters complete, HSAT sought additional grants and donations to fund the construction of the concrete pads required for the installation and stability of the shelters.
Following a presentation to the Rotary Club, members in attendance voted to contribute to the cost of installing three shelters, including refurbishment and construction of the concrete pads. The Municipality of Lambton Shores' Public Works Department provided in-kind support for the physical installation. The three locations were chosen based on ridership volume and exposure to weather conditions.
Each of the three shelters now features an attractive plaque recognizing the Rotary's generosity. HSAT welcomes further support from organizations and businesses to help fund the installation of the remaining five shelters.
