Swift Talking with the Province About Getting High Speed Internet to Homes That Don't Have It

by Bob Montgomery

Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn says there are still several homes in Southern Ontario that don't have high speed internet.

Ginn says Swift is one of at least four programs that are bringing broadband to Southern Ontario. But he says even after all of the current projects are completed there will be some homes that are without broadband service. So Ginn says Swift is in discussions with the province about identifying those properties and getting an estimate on what it would cost to service them. Ginn says there are likely a few thousand properties that can't get service and they're looking into how that can be addressed.

Ginn points out most of these properties are in areas where no reasonable business case could be made for putting the service in so it wouldn't happen if those projects weren't subsidized by the different levels of government including the federal and provincial governments, as well as the county. And Ginn points out Huron County remains the county with the highest percentage of people hooked up, and he's hopeful that Swift can work something out with the province to get those last few properties connected.
