Shoulders on County Road 83 in Exeter Paved to Reduce Risks to Cyclists

by Bob Montgomery

South Huron Mayor George Finch says the shoulders of County Road 83, or Thames Road, east of Exeter to the Huron Produce Greenhouse have now been paved to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Finch says Huron County agreed to pave the shoulders because many of the people that work in the greenhouse are temporary foreign workers who use bicycles to get into town to shop or enjoy other activities. Finch says County Road 83 is the busiest road in Huron County and represented a serious risk to pedestrians or cyclists as it was. Finch says he started discussions with the county about the road back in 2019. He's very happy that the shoulders in both directions are now paved for two kilometres from the town out to the Huron Produce Greenhouse. Finch points out, they're not bike lanes, but actually paved shoulders

Finch says having the entire shoulder paved in both directions creates lots of room for cyclists to travel safely into town and back. Finch says research shows 12,000 vehicles travel on County Road 83 per day during the summer.
