PSA - Flood Warning

Heavy precipitation expected with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl.

Forecasts of 50-60 mm of rain possible, with the potential for localized amounts of 100mm. Risk of minor flooding.

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl, now a large low-pressure system, is forecast to track across Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) watershed area overnight tonight (Tuesday, July 9, 2024), through Thursday, resulting in rainfall totals up to 50-60 millimetres (mm) across much of the watershed. Rain is expected to end by the early hours of Thursday morning.

Based on the current forecast, river flow forecasting models indicate that levels in watercourses will begin to rise Wednesday morning. Major flooding is not anticipated with the forecasted rainfall but, should we receive the higher amounts that are possible, flooding could extend beyond the traditional low-lying undeveloped flood-plain areas. Stream flows should peak over the weekend.

Residents are reminded to use caution around creeks and rivers, and to keep children and pets away from all waterways. With students out of school for Summer Break, special consideration should be given towards water safety and when travelling.

This message will remain in effect until 9:00 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2024, unless otherwise updated. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will provide an update if required.
