New Habitat For Humanity Home Is Under Construction In Goderich
by Bob Montgomery
There have been a few delays but a new Habitat for Humanity home is now under construction on Anglesea Street in Goderich.
Habitat Executive Director Cheryl Jefferson says the footings, foundation and basement walls have all been done and Royal Homes has set the shell of the main floor, which means the roof is done, but kitchen cupboards still have to go in, doors and trim on the interior all have to be put on, flooring has to be done, painting has to be done, the basement has to be insulated and drywalled. The exterior has to be sided and eavestroughing put up, and in spring they'll get the landscaping done and put in the deck and stairs.
It's a three bedroom home and Lori and her kids, Tyler and Tia can hardly wait to move in. They currently live in the upstairs of a duplex but they were there at their new home when things were being moved into place and they were already figuring out which window was going to be their bedroom window and deciding that next year the Christmas tree would go in the living room window.
Jefferson says their excitement is understandable. Lori filled out the application and completed the required volunteer hours back in 2020. But road work delayed the project for one year, then it was delayed for another year due to some infrastructure work and then the following year it was delayed again because the project had grown. She says all of that was good for the town and good for the project but it wasn't as good for Lori and her family to have to wait three years.
Since then the project has been moving along very well and they expect Lori and the kids will be moving in to their new home in June or July of 2025.
