Jane’s Walk Huron Hosts a Variety of Community Walks that Explore Huron’s Rich Heritage
by Bob Montgomery
Jane’s Walk Huron invites the community to explore Huron County’s rich heritage through 24 guided walks taking place in 11 communities as part of the global Jane’s Walk Festival running on May 4th and 5th.
Jane's Walks were inspired by Jane Jacobs, an American-Canadian writer, urbanist, and activist who championed a community-based approach to city-building. Jane’s Walks are free events that encourage people to discover unseen aspects of their communities and to use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. The Huron event will take participants on an immersive journey that explores cultural landmarks, hidden gems, and iconic sites through 24 guided walks for residents and visitors alike. The walks will be led by knowledgeable local historians and community enthusiasts and promise to unveil the fascinating narratives that have shaped our identity over the years.
Highlights of the walks include the exploration of several Historic Districts. Participants are invited to:
Marvel at the architectural sights that stand as testaments to bygone eras in Brussels and Goderich.
Visit St. Joseph or Zurich to learn more about the tales and legends not found in many history books.
Learn about the trees and the springs of Howard Street West during the Bayfield Tree Walk.
Take in the vibrant pulse of Huron County by exploring the animated murals in Clinton.
Learn about an affordable housing project in Goderich.
Learn about the fascinating travels of the early settlers to the region by visiting the VanEgmond House near Seaforth.
Visit Wingham to learn more about Huron County’s Nobel prize-winning laureate, Alice Munro.
Huron Cultural Development Officer, Karen Stewart says whether you're a history buff, a curious explorer or simply looking to connect with your community, Jane’s Walks Huron offers something for everyone. “Each walk is about one hour long and many are pet-friendly. So plan to join this celebration of the rich heritage of Huron.”
Jane’s Walks Huron is coordinated by Huron County Cultural Services. No Registration is required. For more information, including the starting point for each walk, visit: https://www.huroncounty.ca/janes-walk-huron/
