Huron County Warden Glen McNeil Passed the Gavel Over To The New Warden, Jamie Heffer, At Yesterday's Inaugural County Council Meeting

by Bob Montgomery

Past Warden Glen McNeil was warden for two terms – the first for 2021 and 2022 and the second for 2023 and 2024. He's very grateful for the opportunity to serve as warden for two terms.

McNeil says when he was first elected the two primary issues were housing and homelessness. They still are but significant progress has been made in addressing both of them. “A week ago we had the ribbon-cutting for a twenty-unit build on Sanders Street in Exeter of affordable housing. We're addressing it. And in Goderich, on Gibbons Street, we have a forty-unit build that will be comprised of affordable housing, rent-geared-to-income and supportive housing for those that find themselves in that situation.” McNeil points out none of that would be possible without the cooperation of all of the players in the county. The county didn't have the land for a forty-unit but the Goderich Mayor at that time, Myles Murdoch, said they did and they agreed to sell that land to the county for one dollar.

Going forward, McNeil says he will always be there for the community, but he does look forward to spending more time with his family because they have made significant sacrifices over the last few years when he couldn't be at home. He is looking forward to spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Beyond that, it's been a great journey and he can't say enough about the support he's received from county council and county staff. He's looking forward to the next few years.
