Huron County Students Invited to Enter Habitat for Humanity Writing Contest

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County Habitat for Humanity is inviting students from grade four to grade six to enter a writing contest. Resource Development Coordinator Heather Glenister says the students are asked to write about what home means to them in either a story or a poem. She says the contest gives students the opportunity to give back to their community in a fun and meaningful way. For every story or poem entered by a Huron County student, Habitat for Humanity Huron County receives a ten dollar grant which helps to build homes for local families. Across Canada, three grand prize winners will also receive a thirty-thousand dollar grant to help their local Habitat for Humanity. In addition, nine runners-up will receive a ten-thousand dollar grant for their local Habitat for Humanity.

“Nothing compares to the feeling of strength and security that comes from having a safe place to call home. Every child in Canada deserves to feel this way, and that’s why we continue building and advocating for more affordable housing,” says Julia Deans, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada.

Glenister says in the past some of the stories from Huron County students have been very inspiring and filled with gratitude. But, she says they know there are children who aren't having that experience. They're hoping to have 125 Huron County students submit stories this year. The contest is all about children telling their stories about their homes, but it's also about raising money to help families in need get those homes. The deadline for entries is February 23rd.

Students looking for more information and how to enter the contest can go to the Habitat for Humanity Huron County website or visit the contest website.
