Huron County Economic Development Team Working on New Event Calendar

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County's Economic Development Officer says they've been working on a new Event Calendar so that visitors and even residents can find out what's going on in the county.

Rick Sickenger says they had been hearing from both residents and visitors that it was very difficult to find out what was going on in Huron County on any particular weekend. To address that problem they've been working for almost two years now on improving the Huron County online Calendar as well as providing an event and festivals calendar on their tourism website.

“To do that, we now scrape event listings from most of our municipal partner's calendars so they're aggregated all into one spot, as well, people can submit their events online through huroncounty.ca.” Sickinger also recommends that people check out the community events calendar at huroncounty.ca, and they will see how much is happening in Huron County on any given day. He says on any day there can be as many as six to eight community events and happenings listed on that calendar.

Sickenger says in the past each municipality would post what was going on in their municipality and that's no longer the case. He points out visitors don't know or care where the municipal boundaries are and residents don't confine themselves to just their municipality. So they're very happy to have created something that makes it easier to find out what's going on throughout the county. Now they just have to promote the calendar.

Something else they've done is create a weekly email blast for the busy summer months called What's Happening in Ontario's West Coast. You can sign up for that at ontarioswestcoast.ca. At the bottom of the website there's a keep-in-touch tab where you can subscribe and get the weekly emails.
