Goderich Residents Make The Switch From Garbage Bags To Wheelie Bins This Month

by Bob Montgomery

Goderich residents will be trading in their garbage bags for wheelie bins later this month.

Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet says residents will be receiving their organic wheelie bins and their waste wheelie bins this week. After September 23rd bag tags will be a thing of the past. Bazinet says people will be able to put a wide range if things into the organic bin and that will dramatically reduce the amount of material that goes to the landfill. “You can put meat and steak bones and eggshells, just about any food waste can go in your organics, paper towels, napkins, stuff like that. You can actually wrap some stuff up, like food scraps, in newspapers and that can go in there as well.”

Bazinet says residents will be receiving a mail-out of the acceptable items and there will also be an online app with a QR code that people can scan and search an item to see if it's acceptable in their organic bin.

Bazinet says they recently had an open house in the town hall and more than one hundred people packed the town hall to find out more about how the wheelie bins will work. He admits it is a change and there will be some bumps in the road. Pick up days will be one of the changes, but he expects people will make the necessary changes fairly quickly. He urges anyone who doesn't have the information they need to call town hall. He doesn't expect anyone will be asking them to bring the bag tags back.
