County of Huron Approves 2024 Budget

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County council approved the budget for 2024 at Wednesday's council meeting.

The County of Huron Council passed its annual municipal budget at Wednesday's meeting in the amount of $52,826,607.00, resulting in a 5.54% levy increase for 2024. Huron County Warden Glen McNeil says that equates to the average residential property tax increasing by $59, and average farm land increase of $56. If you break that down on a daily basis, it equates to an increase of $.16 per day. McNeil says they did use some reserves to get to that figure but all in all believes it is a very responsible budget.

“Some individuals can speak about a 0%, that's not reality. We'd have to cut services and our residents deserve more than that. And so to provide the services that our residents have requested, we required that increase.” McNeil adds, he would really like to congratulate county staff because they initially brought back an original budget that was higher than the one that was passed. In consultation with county council, they were able to arrive at the final, lower figure.
