The Huron County Museum is offering Salt of the Earth Limited Edition Program for School Groups

By Bob Montgomery

The Huron County Museum is inviting teachers to kickoff the spring field trip season with the Museum and Compass Minerals.

Museum Education and Program Coordinator Michael Roy says they're excited to be kicking off their spring field trip season. “On April 15th and April 22nd we're doing a special Salt Education program with a worker with Compass Minerals who's worked underground. Students are going to be able to come and listen to them give a presentation and they'll answer their questions. Students are always curious about what life is like in the mine and what working underground is like, so they're going to do a regular education program but get a chance to listen to an expert who works in the mine.”

They also have videos to show students about what it's like to be underground in the mine, and they have salt artifacts at the museum that students can explore.

Roy says they're very grateful to Compass Minerals for covering the transportation costs to the Avon Maitland and Huron Perth Separate School Board for the field trips. “Just a few months ago I had a teacher who came here with their classes and had a great time and said the field trip wouldn't have been possible without the transportation costs being covered.”

Anyone interested in booking a field trip, either on site or virtual, can call the Museum or email them at museum@huroncounty.ca. They have lots of open dates, but they are filling up. Their April 22nd trip is already filled up but there are some spots for the April 15th trip, and those are the trips featuring someone who works in the salt mine.

More information about those trips and many more can be found on the Huron County Museum website.
