Lake Huron Coastal Centre Asking For Support On Giving Tuesday, December 3rd

by Bob Montgomery

Lake Huron Coastal Centre Executive Director Alyssa Bourassa says Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 to encourage people to enact positive change by supporting charities.

It follows Black Friday every year and it's the biggest day of giving in Canada and around the world, inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generously every year. Bourassa says the goal for the Lake Huron Coastal Centre is eight-thousand dollars to tackle plastic pollution on Lake Huron and they've already raised close to one-thousand dollars, so they're asking people to help them cross the finish line on December 3rd.

Bourassa says donations will be used for a variety of projects aimed at reducing plastic pollution. “Your donations will support beach clean-ups in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and increase education and awareness around micro-plastics in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, as well as support community science, supply six beach clean-up stations along the coast with materials needed for community stewardship and remove harmful plastic from wildlife habitat.”

Bourassa says plastic pollution is a very persistent problem and try as they might, they have not found a solution yet. We still use a lot of plastic that inevitably ends up on the Lake Huron shoreline as well as other places where it's not wanted.

Bourassa says as a small charity the support of donors is critical in enabling them to continue with their programs. Anyone who would like to donate can go to www.lakehuron.ca/donate.
