In Honour of Earth Day, the County of Huron Releases Home Energy Savings Guide
by Bob Montgomery
Huron County is celebrating Earth Day this year with the introduction of a new Home Energy Savings Guide.
Huron County Climate and Energy Specialist Derry Wallis says the Guide is a comprehensive resource designed to help residents save energy, water, and money. Residential energy use accounts for approximately 16.5 percent of Canada's total energy consumption, making it crucial for homeowners and renters to adopt energy-efficient practices. The Home Energy Savings Guide offers simple and cost-effective solutions that can be implemented in any home. “It explains opportunities that help them save energy in different aspects of their homes, so it focuses a little bit on insulation and it talks about windows and doors and it talks about water conservation and different things people can do to improve the energy efficiency of their home while also saving on their utility bills.”
Wallis says heating and cooling use up the most energy in our homes, but she adds there are a lot of other, smaller things that contribute to energy use and the guide explains a number of ways in which those can be minimized. They include improving the interior and exterior air quality, reducing outside noise, regulating temperature all year round, and creating a more durable structure that can withstand the warm and cold months in Ontario.
The guide includes many simple and cost-effective ways to reduce energy and water consumption in your home which can lead to yearly savings on utility bills.
