Huron Newcomer Support Association to Host Information Night

by Bob Montgomery

The Huron County Local Immigration Partnership has been helping Ukrainians settle in Huron County since Russia invaded their country almost two years ago.

Immigration Partnership Manager Mark Nonkes says they've come to realize they need a more established support system to ease all newcomers, from Ukraine and elsewhere, into life in Huron County. The Huron Newcomer Support Association is a new volunteer group that has been created to do just that. Nonkes says they're hosting an information night this Tuesday at the McKay Centre in Goderich to explain what they're all about and also to recruit more volunteers to join them.

Nonkes says the goal of the Huron Newcomer Support Association is to make newcomers feel as comfortable as possible in an entirely new community. So if they don't have a car maybe someone can drive them around, or maybe they can help them find a place to live, but he says, it all depends on how many volunteers are there to support them.

The Information Night is on Tuesday, November 28th from 7:00pm until 8:30pm at the McKay Centre, 10 Nelson Street East in Goderich
