Huron County Students Are Invited To Enter Habitat For Humanity Writing Contest
by Bob Montgomery
Habitat For Humanity is inviting Huron County students to enter their writing contest about how they feel about their home.
Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 are invited to share what home means to them in an annual national writing contest that is accepting submissions online at MeaningofHome.ca until February 21st.
Teachers, parents and others who engage with youth are encouraged to get them involved in this creative project. “Last year’s entries were heartwarming, full of kindness and very inspiring,” says Heather Glenister, Habitat Huron County’s Resource Development Coordinator. “However, we all know that there are children who aren’t having the same experience.”
Housing continues to be an important concern for all Canadians, including children, who understand how housing can provide them with a safe place – a place to study, pursue their dreams and to build a better life.
Students have the opportunity to give back to their community in a fun and meaningful way. For every story or poem entered by a Huron County student, Habitat for Humanity Huron County receives a $10 grant which helps to build homes for local families. Across Canada, three grand prize winners will also receive a $30,000 grant to help their local Habitat for Humanity. In addition, nine runners-up will receive a $10,000 grant for their local Habitat for Humanity.
“Nothing compares to the feeling of strength and security that comes from having a safe place to call home. Every child in Canada deserves to feel this way, and that’s why we continue building and advocating for more affordable housing,” says Julia Deans, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada.
Founded in 2007 by SagenTM, the Meaning of Home contest has raised over $2.3 million while encouraging more than 100,000 students to become more active and compassionate citizens. Last year, over 12,000 entries raised $302,000, helping families in 42 communities across Canada build a brighter future through affordable homeownership.
Submissions are being accepted online at MeaningofHome.ca and the deadline for submissions is February 21st.
