Huron County Council Approves Speed Limit By-Law Amendment For Village Of Winchelsea

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County council has approved a Speed Limit By-Law Amendment for the Village of Winchelsea.

South Huron Mayor George Finch explains the village of Winchelsea is located at the intersection of Kirkton Road and County Road 11, or Hern Line. There are only about thirty people living in the village but the traffic going through that intersection at the current 90 kilometres an hour has caused some problems. Finch says there has been one accident fairly recently and several more in the past.

Finch says some of the houses in the village tend to block the site lines to the west. There is a stop sign for north-west traffic going through the intersection, but east-west traffic can proceed through the intersection at 90 kilometres an hour and that has resulted in collisions with north-south traffic.

County council has agreed to the introduction of a 70 kilometres an hour zone on the north and south ends of Winchelsea. The transition zones will look to calm traffic speeds down coming into the urban areas. And then a 50 kilometres an hour speed zone is recommended through the village due to complaints from residents and a recently reviewed accident history.
