Huron County Council Approves Motion to Discontinue Huron Heritage Fund

by Bob Montgomery

A motion to do away with the Huron Heritage Fund was passed at this week's county council meeting.

The motion was presented by North Huron Reeve Paul Heffer who said there's no doubt the Heritage Fund did a lot of good things and a lot of people benefited. But, he said, after looking over a listing of who got funds over the last few years he felt there were a lot of people on the list that didn't really qualify for Heritage funding. Heffer suggested the program has run its course and that's why the majority of councillors voted in favour of ending the program.

Heffer says he believes the time has come to see if the 25-thousand dollars a year could be going to a better cause, but if down the road enough people feel the program should be re-instated, then it could be brought back.
