Huron County Approves Tender for Gibbons Street Apartments

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County council has approved the tender for the apartment project on Gibbons Street in Goderich.

Warden Glen McNeil says he's very proud of Huron County for recognizing the need for affordable housing, rent geared to income and supportive housing. The tender is for 13.5 million dollars and McNeil says he is committed, along with the county's CAO and staff, to seek funding sources outside of Huron County for this project and that would include Federal and Provincial sources and others.

McNeil adds, he has attended many meetings throughout Ontario as Warden of Huron County and Chair of the Western Wardens Caucus and this is by no means a Huron County problem. The problem exists across the entire province. He says the difference is Huron County is addressing it. McNeil says construction is expected to start on the project in 2024 and be completed by 2025. There will be forty units comprised of affordable, rent geared to income and ten units of supportive housing units.
