Goderich Looking At Options For Reducing Speed Limits In Some Communities

by Bob Montgomery

Goderich council is looking at options to help them reduce the speed of traffic in some communities.

They've received complaints about speeding in some communities and Mayor Trevor Bazinet says there are more people using the roads because there are more people moving into Goderich, so the town has become a lot busier than residents are used to. But, before they just go out and get speed bumps or other traffic-calming things, they want to collect as much data as they can to make sure what they decide on is appropriate for the problem.

“We're able to collect data on the speed of vehicles, and we can take that on an average per day, and there is a ratio that we go by and then implement the appropriate traffic-calming policies. That could be speed bumps or other structures, so that's what we want to do before we just go ahead and install speed bumps.” Bazinet says what they've learned in the past is that as soon as they install speed bumps on one street, people start calling them because they want speed bumps on their street. In some cases people who have speed bumps on their street call to say they want them removed. As a result of this, they want to make sure they have the data available to justify whatever action they take to address the problem.
