Eco Exeter Receives Grant From Sunset Community Foundation
by Bob Montgomery
The Eco Exeter Environment Team has received a grant from the Sunset Community Foundation.
Eco Exeter is a team made up of students from the South Huron District High School and their teacher Amanda Keller. They applied for a grant of $1,000 so they could start up a community market this fall. “The idea is that the students would contact people in the community that sell either eco-friendly products or local products and then we would set up in the large gym at South Huron District High School, free of charge to the vendors. We're hoping that the community members would come in and see it as a fall market, getting ready for the Christmas season where they can purchase local and environmentally-friendly items.”
Keller says the idea is a new one but came out of the idea that COVID is over and now they can go back to some of the ideas they've had in the past and actually go forward and do them. They still have a couple of meetings planned as the school year winds down, but they don't have any projects planned for the summer. Some of their grade twelve students will be leaving them after they graduate and new ones will be joining them in the fall so they'll focus on getting their new community market ready for around November.
Grace Theophilopoulos is a grade eleven student with Eco Exeter so she's got one more year left. She says she got involved with Eco Exeter because she's interested in protecting our Earth and joining Eco Exeter seemed like a good way for her to do her part. She' has also developed her own side project. “I take in clothing from parents and I consign them, so I sell them and I give them some profit and then I get to profit and it prevents more clothing from going to the landfill.”
