County of Huron releases 2023 Annual Report

by Bob Montgomery

Huron County Council was presented with the 2023 Annual Report at last week's county council meeting.

The report provides a summary of the county’s priority projects as well as details on individual services areas. Huron County Warden Glen McNeil says on behalf of county council he wants to express their gratitude to their dedicated staff who have worked to implement these initiatives and provide essential services to the community. He added he would also like to thank the many community partners for their collaboration and support because without those partnerships they would not be able to achieve meaningful and sustainable progress.

The priorities on the list included making Huron County a welcoming and inclusive county. Other priorities included Alternate Energy Solutions, a Service Level Review, Asset Management, Workforce Attraction, Economic Readiness and access to Health Services. But McNeil says the two top priorities for the county are housing and homelessness. “And we are involved in three housing projects for affordable housing, rent geared to income and supportive housing that individuals find they need. One of the projects is the Bennett Street development in Goderich and that is six units, two tri-plexes and we are also completing a build in 2024 on Sanders Street in Exeter and that will encompass twenty units of affordable housing. We've also broken ground on a rent geared to income, affordable housing and supportive housing build in Goderich on Gibbons Street that will involve forty units.”

McNeil says Huron County is taking housing and homelessness very seriously and is addressing those issues with these builds. McNeil says he also wants say that Huron County is a very welcoming county to all. “Equity, diversity and inclusion are all very important to county council and everyone is welcome in Huron County. The County of Huron thanks the staff, partners, and many stakeholders who contributed to successful projects in 2023.”
