Coldest Night of the Year Walks are Being Held in Seven Communities in Huron and Perth Counties This Year

by Bob Montgomery

Coldest Night of the Year walks are being held in seven communities in Huron and Perth counties this year.

Walks were scheduled last night for Wingham, Goderich, Exeter, St. Marys, Stratford, Listowel and Seaforth. Just under 300 people joined the walk in Goderich and it was very much like the Coldest Night of the Year. Among the guests were Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb, Huron County Warden Glen McNeil and Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet. McNeil says this is the fourth year for the walk in Goderich and they had more walkers this year than any other year and there's a good reason for that. “Everyone realizes the need to support those that are hurt and in hunger and are homeless.”

McNeil says it's very important that those of us who are so privileged think about those who don't have the privileges that we do, that don't have a bed or a warm place to sleep and wonder where their next meal is coming from and help those people.

McNeil says the money raised through the Coldest Night of the Year walk will go to the United Way to help those who are homeless. McNeil adds, it's an issue that Huron County council and staff take very seriously and to that end Huron County is doing a build of affordable, rent-geared-to-income and supportive housing and the ground has already been broken.
