A Special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Was Held This Week To Mark The Completion Of A New 20-Unit Affordable Housing Development in Exeter
by Bob Montgomery
The County of Huron celebrated the completion of a new affordable housing development on Sanders Street in Exeter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 20th of this week.
The project is part of the ongoing effort to address housing needs in the region, with funding partially provided by the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative. “This new affordable housing development is an important step toward ensuring that every resident in Huron County has access to safe, quality housing,” said Huron County Warden, Glen McNeil “We are proud to collaborate with our partners to address the growing need for affordable housing in our communities.”
The Sanders Street development consists of a two-storey, 20-unit apartment building featuring 20 one-bedroom units. The building is equipped with essential amenities, including laundry facilities, an elevator, and individual control over heating and air conditioning. Each apartment is also furnished with a full-size refrigerator and stove. McNeil adds, they're very pleased that seven of the twenty units are fully accessible for people who have accessibility issues.
“Exeter is a wonderful place to live, and today’s ribbon cutting is a celebration of how we are making it even more accessible for people who need affordable options,” stated South Huron Mayor George Finch. “This development will make a real difference for residents who are looking for a place to call home.”
In Ontario, affordable housing is defined as housing that costs less than 30 percent of a household's gross income, while deeply affordable housing costs less than 50 percent. The Sanders Street development will offer a mix of affordable and deeply affordable units to individuals who meet the qualifications required for tenancy.
The County of Huron extends its gratitude to JPM Architecture Inc. (formerly Allan Avis Architects) for the innovative design and to Bronnenco Construction for their high-quality work in bringing the project to completion. Warden McNeil says they hope to have people moving into the apartments by the end of December.
