20th Annual Alice Munro Festival Short Story Contest

by Bob Montgomery

Entries are now being accepted for the annual Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story writing competition.

Festival Chair Karen Stewart says the 20th annual short story competition provides an opportunity for emerging Canadian writers to explore the short story, a literary art form made popular by 2013 Nobel laureate Alice Munro. The winner in the adult competition will be awarded $1500, with $250 going to each of the two runners-up. Prizes in the youth competition are sponsored by the Virtual High School in Bayfield and include $500 for first place and $250 each for two runners-up.

Stewart says it is a fiction contest so there are no restriction on the theme, that's entirely up to the writer. Submissions for the competition are now being accepted until March 15th through Submittable. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $10 per entry for youths. Entries must be written by a Canadian author or an author living in Canada, who is not yet published . The story must be an original work of fiction of up to 2,500 words in the English language. Winners will be announced at an event in Wingham on Friday, June 7, 2024.

The Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story is an annual festival that takes place in venues throughout Huron County including Bayfield, Blyth and Wingham.

More information and full contest guidelines can be found at the Alice Munro Festival website.
